Country Hotel & Restaurant Heydalur

A lovely country hotel and camp site in the remote Westfjords wilderness. The closest village is about 100 kilometres away, so peace and quiet are guaranteed. Heydalur offers horse riding, fishing trips, hiking, swimming in natural hot springs as well as indoor hot tub. Food at the restaurant is very tasty and straightforward Icelandic homemade food. The service is warm and sincere.

Hotel Breiðavík

Peace and quiet here is guaranteed: no neighbours, the nearby road isn’t very busy, and you won’t even get proper mobile reception. This country hostel has private double rooms, shared dorm rooms and a camp site. There’s a huge sandy beach nearby, which is definitely worth a visit.

Hotel West

In the recent years young entrepreneurs have set up quirky cafes and individual guesthouses in the small villages dotted around Westfjords. Hotel West is a good example of this. A family-run small hotel with ten rooms, focussed on details such as high-quality breakfast, beautiful pillowcases and excellent service.

Hotel Flókalundir

A nice hotel close to Brjánslækur harbour. The en-suite rooms are basic but good. However, with this hotel it’s all about the location: right by the sea and close to the Hellulaug natural hot springs.

Hotel Djúpavík

Excellent spot for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. The hotel’s squeaky wooden floors and cosily decorated rooms take you back to the 1930s, when the building operated as a guesthouse for the female employees of the local herring factory. The building was renovated in the 1980s and re-opened as a hotel. Book a room on the side of the hotel closer to the road and you’ll get to enjoy gorgeous sea views. Book a room on the opposite side, and you will be lulled to sleep by the rippling waterfall behind the hotel. Shared bathrooms and showers. The café-restaurant does lunch and dinner as awell as amazing cakes and sandwiches throughout the day. Hotel Djúpavík is open all year round. If you arrive by air (Eagle Air flies to the nearby Gjögur Airport once or twice a week – see www.ernir.is) the hotel will arrange your transfer. If you’re travelling in the winter, contact the hotel owners in advance to double check on the weather conditions. Although in Reykjavik it might be +5C degrees and sunny, the roads around Djúpavík can be completely snowed in and the airport closed. ‘The hotel is open only if the roads are’, Eva says. One of the most beautiful hikes in the area is the hour-long trek to the top of the waterfall behind the hotel.

Hotelli Ísafjördur

This town hotel may look a little gloomy architecture-wise, but the sea view from the rooms is amazing! The hotel also runs the hostels in Isafjordur, so all reservations can be done centrally in the same place.

Hotel Reykjanes

Accommodation in the peace and quiet of central Westfjords, with the sea on your doorstep and mountains in the background. Reykjanes has a hotel, a slightly cheaper hostel as well as self-contained apartments for larger groups. The cherry on top is the outdoor geothermal swimming pool and steam sauna. The surrounding area has great hiking trails and it’s also good for birdwatching – the Reykjanes area is home to many different types of sea birds. The hotel is open only in the summer.
